Ende der 70er Jahre begannen die Testflüge der F-18 und Anfang der 80er Jahre schließlich war die F-18 in der Flotte aufgenommen worden. Die F-18 bewies ihre Vielseitigkeit 1991, als sie in einer Operation erstmal feindliche Flugzeuge abschoss und dann noch dazu das feindliche Gebiet bombardierte. Diese Art von Flugzeugen nennt man Jagdbomber. Sie zerstören wie die F-18 die feindlichen Flugzeuge und bombardieren dann feindliche Bodenziele. Im zweiten Weltkrieg waren Jagdbomber sehr verbreitet.
Die F-18 war auch durch Manövrierfähigkeit ausgezeichnet. Ein großer Vorteil war auch, dass ihre Wartung im Gegensatz zu ihren Vorgängern nur die Hälfte der Zeit dauerte . Anders als bei ihren Vorgängern wie der A-7 Skyhawk (siehe Bild) war der Motor leicht zugänglich. 1987 wurde die F-18 vom Einsitzer zum Zweisitzer und ihre Avionik verbesserte sich. Auch das Radar wurde besser und die zwei neueren Versionen konnten bessere Raketen als ihre Vorgänger aufnehmen.
